Do you know the different types of roof shingles to use? Here is your guide to roofing materials, so you can choose the best one for you.
Types of Roof Shingles
Roof shingles are the barrier between the elements and your home. When in good order, they act as a waterproof shield protecting the structure. If they are damaged, worn or old you may need a new roof.
The various types of shingles offer different levels of performance and cost.
Asphalt Shingles
Asphalt shingles come in two main types. 3-tab roof shingles are the standard form of roofing shingles. They are easily identified by their rectangular look.
They are the preferred low-cost roofing option on most homes across America. These shingles come in many colors and are easy to install.
Architectural roof shingles are a higher cost asphalt shingle. They are sometimes described as laminated or dimensional shingles. As with 3-tab roof shingles, they come in many colors to match any building materials.
The architectural shingles offer greater durability in all weather conditions and are more aesthetically appealing. They can be used to replicate wood, slate or tile roofing.
Wood and Shake Roof Shingles
Standard wood shingles and shake shingles are both made from wood. The standard wood shingles are sawn to give a smooth finish. Shake shingles are split leaving the grain texture intact.
Wood and shake shingles are excellent insulators. They give better heat retention than asphalt shingles.
When combined with suitable building design they can be very attractive. Modern building techniques and materials can combine to improve the durability and fire resistance of these natural products.
Tile Roof Shingles
The terracotta clay roof tiles are common on historical buildings and in certain geographical regions such as the southwestern United States. They come in several different styles including a traditional curved tile. As well as a traditional terracotta color, tiles can come in many colors.
They may be more expensive than asphalt shingles but they are a long-lasting roofing material. Life expectancy can be as much as 100 years.
Slate Roof Shingles
Slate is very durable and fire resistant. It’s a natural product that has stood the test of time. Synthetic versions are also available.
The color options are very attractive and slates can be cut into a variety of shapes. This durability and appearance come at a higher cost than other options.
Metal Roofing
A low-galvanized metal roof is a highly durable and affordable roofing solution. Other more expensive metals are also available. A metal roof can have the appearance of tiles or other shingles.
Time for a New Roof
If you can see any light coming through your roof, any obvious damage or dropping you will need to act quickly. It’s time to repair or possibly replace the roof and decide between the different types of roof shingles.
